About Us

NLDA is a non-profit corporation dedicated to research, education, and advocacy for nonverbal learning disorders.

Nonverbal Learning Disorder, known as NLD, is a neurophysiological disorder originating in the right hemisphere of the brain. Reception of nonverbal or performance-based information governed by this hemisphere is impaired in varying degrees, including problems with visual-spatial, intuitive, organizational, evaluative, and holistic processing functions.

History of the
Nonverbal Learning Disorders Association (NLDA)

The Nonverbal Learning Disorders Association was born in the year 2000 when two groups of people dedicated to research, education, and advocacy for Nonverbal Learning Disorders merged. These two groups, one from the West Coast and one from the East, although separated by three thousand miles were on the same mission. That mission was to improve the lives of those affected by NLD.  It was this common goal that was the impetus for their joining forces and forming the NLDA.

On the East Coast the group began as a determined grassroots effort made up of parents and adults affected by NLD, as well as professionals who evaluated, diagnosed and treated them. They met in Connecticut, some of them were local but some came from as far North as Maine and some as far south as Maryland. The group strategized, publicized and held marathon weekend brain storming meetings. They met on a regular basis for about two years and made great strides in education, awareness, and advocacy.

At the same time a West Coast parent support group headed by Sue Thompson, the author of “The Source for Nonverbal Learning Disorders” had been meeting for a few years. SHARE Support was a dynamic group formed by parents of children with the diagnosis of NLD and those who worked with them. The growing Share Support group began to run conferences on the West Coast that spread the word and made it possible for many more to learn about NLD.

The fortunate merging of these two groups has grown into an international organization of over 3,000 members sharing a common hope, to increase understanding and improve the lives of those affected by NLD. It is the hope of the NLDA that in the near future we will realize our dreams and the understanding of NLD will commonplace.
